Television News: Finding the Right Balance?

The TV News Space continues to see new entrants and is interestingly poised. While there is pressure to generate huge viewership in the form of TRPs and hence the revenues, there is a need to serve the purpose for being there: to inform and to analyse. The revenue pressure is compelling some of them to cater to the lowest common denominator with stories that sensationalise. Even journalists working in news channels are more than open in their expression of helplessness on this accord.

The ones who are going the distance on trivialising the business of news for commerce have been labelled tabloid channels and are raking in the money, the others are considered serious news channels and are bleeding and lagging in the leadership sweepstakes. What is the way out? How can this change? Will news rather than TRPs ever come to the forefront? Or, will the industry get divided down the middle with one side representing the tabloid channels and the other the serious news providers?

There is also a rush into the language and niche genre segment. Will viewers respond positively? Will they lap up the offerings?

The Indian News Television Summit will examine these trends.
